Online Wine Deals. Are They Really a Deal?
Lately you may have noticed a lot of deals on sites like Groupon and Living Social for online wine shops. These deals seem too good to be true. $30 for $60 worth of fine wine? Yes please! But as great as these deals sound, are they really good deals?
After looking a little closer at some of these “deals” I’ve noticed a few things to pay attention to.
1.) What is the wine selection like?
I’ve noticed that a lot of times, these sites have a very limited selection of wine and often, I have not heard of one wine on the site. Always check out the website before you purchase a deal for an online wine retailer. If it’s all wine you could buy at the local grocery store, then it’s probably not a good deal. If you’ve never heard of any of the wines, you might want to do a little more research on the wines to make sure they are wines you would want to purchase.
2.) Is Shipping included? How much does shipping cost?
Often the value of your coupon can NOT be used towards shipping. Shipping can be extremely expensive on these sites so make sure you know what additional money you’ll have to shell out to use your coupon.
3.) Will someone be home to sign for the wine?
Usually someone over the age of 21 has to be home to sign for a shipment of wine. If the delivery man has trouble delivering your wine you may have to go to the post office or the UPS office to pick up your wine. This is certainly not as big of a concern as the selection of wine or the shipping cost, but it is something to consider.
So far I have not purchased any of these deals because I haven’t been impressed with the wine selection on the sites and the cost of shipping seems to negate the “great deal”. This is not to say that you shouldn’t buy wine online or through sites like Groupon. I just suggest that you always do your research. Make sure you know what you are getting before you make the purchase.
What are your thoughts on online wine deals? Have you purchased any? Was it a good experience? Let me know in the comments. Maybe you’ll make a believer out of me!
